How to geolocate and chronolocate visual media
Visual geolocation and chronolocation workflow using source history, landmarks, maps, weather, shadows, event records, uncertainty ranges, and peer review.

Geolocation asks where an image or video was made. Chronolocation asks when. The two processes interact, but they are not interchangeable. A known place can narrow solar and weather checks. A known date can narrow construction, vegetation, or event records. Keep each inference visible so one bad assumption does not control the result.
Photo and credit
Those record fields are useful leads. The visible deer alone cannot prove the exact coordinates or time, and metadata must be compared with the scene and source history.
1. Preserve the material and claim
Save the highest-quality version, URL, account, caption, upload time, and surrounding post. Extract video keyframes without changing the source file. Write the claimed city, site, date, time, and event separately. Note whether the task seeks a country, street, building, date, hour, or broad period.
Set safety limits before searching. A precise location can expose a home, protester, military position, shelter, or protected animal. Verification does not create an automatic duty to publish coordinates.
2. Inventory clues without guessing
Review the whole frame and then sections. Record what is visible before naming a place:
- scripts, languages, phone formats, and domains
- traffic side, lane paint, signs, curbs, plates, and vehicles
- poles, wires, lights, bins, hydrants, and transit equipment
- terrain, coast, waterways, soil, trees, and weather
- roof forms, materials, storefronts, monuments, and skylines
- shadows, clocks, screens, posters, construction, and seasonal details
Separate observation from inference. "Three parallel white lines" is observation. "National road marking" is an inference that needs a reference.
3. Generate and test candidates
Search distinctive text, objects, businesses, route numbers, and landmark combinations. Use maps, satellite imagery, street-level photography, local images, planning records, and official venue pages. Rotate the scene mentally and account for camera height, lens distortion, demolition, new construction, and seasonal coverage.
For each candidate, compare a bundle of features: road curve, building order, roof angles, pole spacing, slope, skyline, and fixed objects. Record both matches and conflicts. A famous tower that looks similar is not enough if the surrounding streets fail.
4. Build the time window
Start with the earliest confirmed publication and any reliable original-file timestamp. Search for older copies. Then examine daylight, shadows, weather, foliage, snow, water level, clothing, construction state, signs, event schedules, and known changes at the location.
Use archived imagery to bracket changes. If a wall appears in imagery from March but not January, the scene may fall after construction, subject to archive dates and image quality. Check local time zones and daylight-saving rules before comparing clocks or sunlight.
NOAA's solar calculator accepts location, date, time, and time-zone inputs to calculate solar position, sunrise, sunset, and solar noon. NOAA warns that the tool is no longer actively maintained and that atmospheric conditions and algorithmic uncertainty can affect observed values. Use a shadow result as a consistency check, not a standalone timestamp.
5. Corroborate with independent evidence
Look for other photographs, videos, official notices, transport disruptions, weather observations, livestreams, and firsthand accounts from the same place and period. Confirm that they are independent rather than copies of the target media.
Contact the creator when safe. Ask for the original file, capture device, approximate position, direction faced, time zone, sequence, and nearby witnesses. Do not reveal sensitive information in a public request.
6. Express the conclusion precisely
Record confidence by component:

Have a second reviewer repeat the central match from the saved evidence. Publish comparison frames or describe the matching features when doing so is safe and lawful.
Common questions
Can GPS metadata settle location?
It can support a location when provenance is sound, but it can be edited, inherited, stripped, or unrelated to the depicted scene.
Is one matching storefront enough?
Usually not. Confirm surrounding geometry and several stable features.
Can shadows give an exact time?
Rarely from ordinary footage. Object tilt, uneven ground, lens distortion, uncertain direction, and measurement error widen the range.
What if street imagery is old?
Use it to generate clues, then confirm changes through newer photographs, satellite imagery, records, and local reporting.
