Image and video verification: a practical guide
Image and video verification guide for preserving files, tracing origins, checking location and time, assessing edits, protecting sources, and stating limits.

A real photograph can carry a false date. An authentic video can be cropped to hide what happened before it. A generated image can be labeled clearly and used as illustration. Visual verification is not one authenticity test. It is a set of questions about the file, its history, and the claim attached to it.

The image depicts historic camera work. It does not establish the methods, location, or truth of any current visual claim.
Define the visual claim
Write down what the caption or post asserts. Separate these questions:
- Is this the earliest available version?
- Who captured or created it?
- Does the file represent a camera-recorded scene, an edited scene, a composite, or generated content?
- Where was it made?
- When was it made?
- What event and people does it depict?
- Does the crop or sequence omit material context?
One answer does not settle the others. Matching a building can confirm a place while leaving the date unresolved. Finding an older upload can disprove a current-event caption without proving where the scene occurred.
Preserve before investigating
Save the original URL, account, caption, upload time, comments needed for context, screenshot, and highest-quality lawful file. Record the access date and any redirects. If the material could expose a victim, witness, home, medical detail, or precise location, restrict access and make a harm assessment before sharing it with tools or colleagues.
Keep the received file unchanged. Work from copies. Hashes can help show that the preserved file did not change, but a matching hash does not prove the scene true. Note platform recompression, transcoding, stripped metadata, and downloaded thumbnails.
Find earlier and fuller versions
Run several reverse searches on the full frame and distinctive crops. Extract keyframes from video. Search quoted captions, visible signs, usernames, logos, and unusual objects. Compare upload dates carefully because reposting and time zones can confuse order.
Seek a longer recording or adjacent frames. They may reveal a cut, earlier event, missing audio, or the person who filmed. Contact the uploader and ask how the file was obtained, whether an original exists, what happened before and after, and who else was present.
Test place and time
List visual clues before choosing a location: road markings, poles, terrain, storefronts, language, transit, architecture, utility equipment, weather, shadows, and skyline. Match several stable features against maps, street imagery, satellite scenes, local records, and independent photographs. Do not publish a sensitive coordinate merely because it can be found.
For time, check earliest circulation, daylight, weather, vegetation, construction state, event schedules, clothing, clocks, shadows, and other recordings. State a range when the evidence supports only a range.
The UC Berkeley Human Rights Center's guide to evaluating digital open source imagery says assessment may need to address authenticity as well as metadata, source, location, and time. The guide is designed for judges and fact-finders, but those distinct questions also keep newsrooms from treating one technical result as a complete verdict.
Assess editing and synthesis
Look for discontinuities in perspective, light, reflection, motion, compression, edges, audio, and sequence. Use forensic tools as one line of evidence. Record tool version, settings, input file, known limitations, and output. A detector score is not a fact about who made the file or what event occurred.
Ordinary edits include cropping, color correction, stabilization, compression, redaction, and captioning. Decide whether an edit changes meaning, removes context, or is transparently disclosed. Absence of Content Credentials or metadata is not proof of manipulation.
Publish the evidence and limits
Explain how origin, place, time, and context were established. Label reenactments, simulations, illustrations, composites, and generated media. Credit the creator when safe and lawful. If verification remains partial, write "location confirmed; date unresolved" instead of compressing the result into "verified."
Common questions
Does metadata prove when a photo was taken?
No. It can be missing, altered, copied, or generated by later software. Test it against visual and external evidence.
Does cropping make an image deceptive?
Not by itself. The question is whether the crop materially changes the scene's meaning or hides relevant context.
Can a low-resolution video be verified?
Sometimes. Source history, audio, landmarks, timing, and related recordings may still support a narrow conclusion.
Should a newsroom publish its exact geolocation?
Only after weighing public need against risks to people, protected sites, and ongoing operations.
