Reverse search

Use the full image, then crops of distinctive objects, signs, buildings, faces where lawful, and video keyframes. Search mirrored or rotated versions if needed. Compare page dates with archive captures and platform upload records.

Google's image-search help page explains searching with an uploaded file, image URL, or image on a website, with results that can include similar pictures and pages containing the image. Those results are leads. A result date may describe a page update, and similarity does not prove common authorship.

Reverse search is strongest for disproving a new caption when an older, well-documented use appears. It is weaker when the file is new, heavily cropped, private, or absent from the index.

Source interview and original-file review

Contact the apparent creator through an independently confirmed route. Ask open questions before revealing the expected answer: what happened, where were you, what happened before and after, how did you transfer the file, and who else can confirm it? Request the original sequence rather than one selected frame.

An original file can retain higher resolution and context, but "original" needs definition. It may mean the first file sent to the newsroom, not the camera-native recording. Preserve the received item and record each handoff.

Metadata and provenance

Metadata can provide timestamps, coordinates, device and software fields, orientation, and encoding history. Compare those fields with the content and source account. Missing metadata is ordinary after platform processing. Contradictory metadata is a reason to investigate, not an automatic fraud finding.

Signed provenance can make certain origin and edit assertions tamper-evident. Verify the credential, signer, asset binding, and disclosed actions. Then ask whether the signer is the person or organization readers assume and whether the history covers the whole chain.

Visual geolocation and time checks

Match several fixed features against independent imagery. For time, combine earliest circulation, daylight, weather, vegetation, event records, construction changes, and shadows. Keep measurements and comparison frames. Report a range when precision is not justified.

Video-specific work

Video adds sequence, audio, frame timing, edits, and encoding. Inspect the full recording, not only viral excerpts. Extract representative keyframes, transcribe speech and signs, identify cuts, compare sound with visible action, and seek other angles.

That narrow formulation is useful: verification should connect a specific recording to a specific event, not issue a permanent trust badge for the uploader.

Forensic analysis

Use technical analysis when it can distinguish competing explanations. Keep the highest-quality file, tool and model version, settings, comparison data, and analyst interpretation. Test known authentic and manipulated samples when possible. Compression artifacts and AI-detector scores rarely justify a public conclusion alone.

Choose a method stack

  • Old image with new caption: reverse search, page history, source tracing.
  • Unknown protest video: source interview, keyframes, geolocation, time window, other angles.
  • Suspected composite: provenance, original-file review, visual inconsistencies, specialist forensics.
  • Disputed timestamp: source chain, metadata, daylight, weather, event and construction records.

Document how independent findings converge or conflict. More tools do not help if they all depend on the same weak input.

Which method should come first?

Preservation and source history usually come first, followed by earlier-version searches. They may resolve the claim before technical analysis is needed.

Can reverse search identify the photographer?

It can locate a credited earlier page, but the credit still needs confirmation.

Is metadata analysis forensic analysis?

It can be part of it, but reading fields is different from testing file structure, generation traces, or editing artifacts.

Do several detector scores count as corroboration?

Not necessarily. Tools may use similar models, training data, or assumptions and may fail on the same processed file.
