The original story

The fictional North Channel Record covers a cohort study of 4,800 adults who kept weekly migraine diaries. The paper reports that people who used a fictional botanical supplement called Lumen Leaf had 60 percent fewer migraine days after adjustment for age, baseline symptoms, sleep, and medication use.

The newsroom publishes:

A chart compares adjusted rates for users and nonusers. The story calls the association "a preventive effect" and links to the paper. It notes that the study was observational but does not explain self-selection, product variation, or how supplement use was measured.

The alert

Three months later, the journal adds a retraction notice. It states that a row-alignment error in the analysis file shifted supplement exposure values relative to participant outcomes after two datasets were merged. The authors reconstructed the analysis from the original files. The association moved close to zero, and the corrected interval included both modest benefit and modest harm.

The notice says the authors and editor agreed that the published results and conclusions were unreliable. It reports no finding of fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism.

Step 1: preserve and authenticate

The standards editor saves:

  • the original article, chart, caption, metadata, newsletter, and social posts;
  • the paper, supplement, and any earlier version held by the newsroom;
  • the retraction notice and its publication time;
  • the authors' statement and corrected analysis summary; and
  • the reporting notes, spreadsheet, and editorial approvals.

The editor checks the notice on the journal site rather than relying on a screenshot or social post. The DOI record and article page both point readers to the retraction.

Step 2: determine what the notice establishes

The team separates four questions:

The notice names the result, its failure, the journal action, and the newsroom's own mistakes. It avoids "some data were inaccurate," which would force readers to guess whether the conclusion changed.

Step 6: remove unsafe residual advice

The original story included a paragraph suggesting readers ask clinicians about adding the supplement. The correction removes it and states that the retracted study does not provide evidence for changing migraine treatment.

The team searches its site for the study title, supplement name, lead author, DOI, and the phrase "60 percent." It finds a morning newsletter, two social posts, a chart image, and a later roundup that repeated the result.

Each surface receives a direct correction or replacement. Where a platform does not permit editing, the account posts a linked correction and replies to the original. The image file is replaced so old embeds do not keep serving the false chart.
